Constitutional House – Tooting
Discover a “Landmark” new development for temporary accommodation in London.
Constitutional House in Tooting has opened its doors as part of a partnership between Wandsworth Council and LHG.
The 186-room building provides a gold standard of support for families and at the same time is helping the Council save £6million in temporary accommodation costs.
Dave Worth, Director of Housing Services at Wandsworth Council, said: “The building is a landmark development for temporary accommodation in the capital.
“In the 30 years I have been supporting homeless families in London, I have never seen the level of detail and design that has gone into this project.
It means we can keep families in our borough, which ensures they can remain connected to their communities, whilst also saving £6m of taxpayers’ money over the next six years through this agreement. It demonstrates what is possible with planning and a true partnership.”
Meher Nawab, chief executive of LHG, said: “We are really proud of Constitutional House. We wanted to create a new gold standard for temporary accommodation in London and we think we have achieved that. By working with the Wandsworth Borough Council team, we have modified the building to provide places and spaces that work for the people who will be staying there.
“We have added additional, individual storage units, for each family, a faith room, a new learning zone centre for the children to use for homework or general interest, complete with over 20 desktop computers. We have interconnecting rooms and accessible rooms, we have invested in building an outside play area for physical stimulation, as well as a communal kitchen – in addition to the modern appliances each family has in their rooms – so people can meet and mix and socialise.
“Our goal is to have projects like this in every Borough in London in the next five years, so we can help every local authority save money on temporary accommodation costs with high-standard solutions.”
